Frank Hamilton’s legendary Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago has many famous students, including Steve Goodman and John Prine. This class will look at some of their hit songs adapted for clawhammer banjo—including Goodman’s City of New Orleans and Prine’s Paradise.
All proceeds from this workshop will be donated to the Frank Hamilton School.
Michael J. Miles is a master banjoist, guitarist, orchestral composer, author of numerous theatrical works combining music and history, and an acclaimed music educator. Alone in concert or with his signature stage production, From Senegal To Seeger, he has had standing ovations on four continents. But give him a string quartet, jazz band, orchestra, or choir and Michael creates new music bringing critical raves, and professional respect from musical legends. Miles’s latest recording, Mississippi River Suite, was described by renowned banjoist, Tony Trischka as “A Masterpiece!” When Pete Seeger first heard Miles play, he responded, “This is enough to make me want to learn the banjo all over again.”
Miles served for 15 years as the Program Director at Frank’s Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago and still works there as an instructor.
