Description
TERM 6, 2026
INSTRUCTOR: Paul Shaw (bio)
TIME: Wed – 1pm, In-person
INSTRUMENT: Guitar
LEVEL: Beginning/Intermediate
In this class, we will explore fingerpicking from the greats. From Eva Cassidy, Bob Dylan, and Joan Baez to Townes Van Zandt, John Prine, and Elizabeth Cotton, we will listen to songs and learn essential picking patterns and techniques associated with the folk and singer-songwriter traditions.
In addition to learning foundational “Travis” style patterns, we will explore the PIMA method of fingerpicking associated with classical guitar but applied to the singer-songwriter genre. Last, we will learn how to apply hammer-ons, pull-offs, and slides to our playing. Knowledge of first position “open” chords — C and G especially — are helpful to begin this class.
For beginner to intermediate guitar players.
This class meets in person.
