Description
TERM 5, 2023
INSTRUCTOR: Melissa Kacalanos (bio)
DAY/TIME: Thu – 6pm, In-person
INSTRUMENT: Doumbek
The doumbek is a goblet-shaped hand drum traditionally played in dance bands in the Middle East and the Balkans. Its wide dynamic range and crisp, short-sustain sounds make it ideal for accompanying melody instruments without getting in their auditory way. It’s also great for playing exciting drum solos. Since it was designed to accompany dance tunes in its natural habitat, it’s adaptable to many other musical genres such as contra dance music.
In this class, we’ll learn how to produce different tones from a doumbek, use those tones in different rhythms, and accompany melodies with those rhythms. Depending on the interests of the students, we’ll focus on rhythms useful for accompanying tunes from various genres of dance music, such as belly dance, Balkan line dance, and/or contra dance.
This class meets in person.
