Cello for String Band Music

TERM 4, 2024

INSTRUCTOR: Evan Kinney (bio)
DAY/TIME: Tue – 6:00pm, In-person

In the string band setting, the cello is in a pretty unique spot between the guitar and bass. It can mimic the movements of either instrument or carve out its own path using counterpoint melodies and harmony similar to how a trombone might in a brass band.

Making use of the bow as well as the pizzicato, we will learn how to contribute to a string ensemble using bass runs, fragmented chords, counterpoint and of course some fun “cheap tricks.”

This class is recommended for players who already play the cello at at least the advanced beginners level and want to learn how to use it in an old-time setting.

This class meets in person.
