TERM 2, 2024
Come join the fun in these classes designed for kids!
Learn to play folk music with your friends.
One of the essential elements of FHS instruction is learning to play with others. In these classes designed for kids to have fun while playing, they’ll learn the basics of their chosen instrument, then get together to “jam” and practice the skills learned in class with the other classes. In this coordinated Sunday afternoon program, students will have a blast learning the basics of their chosen instrument, then get together to “jam” with the other classes using the skills they’ve learned.
Adults may also sign up for the class, provided they are accompanied by a youngster, and provided they will act like a kid and have fun! Adults may sign up if there are available seats the first week.
Each class includes 35 minutes of chosen instrument instruction (fiddle or guitar) and 15 minutes of “jamming” – playing together with the other classes.
Cost: $125 for 7 weeks (35-minute classes plus time for playing together)
Class size: maximum class size will be 8 students. Adults can register if there are remaining seats the first week.
The first class will be March 3. There will be no class March 31 due to Easter.
If the student needs an instrument:
- Violins can easily be rented through Voss Violins (across from Ponce City Market) and Ronald Sachs Violins in Avondale Estates.
- Guitars can be rented through Village Music in Avondale Estates.
Three classes to choose from:
1. Intro to Fiddle for Kids, Part 1
In this beginner course, kids ages 6 and up will have a lot of fun and will set themselves up to become lifelong learners of the fiddle. Rhythm and bowing are central to this course, and we’ll start from scratch with simple tunes that just use open strings to allow students to focus on their bow arms. We’ll do lots of clapping and singing to learn the chords to popular songs like “Row your Boat” and “In the Jungle!” No sheet music is needed for this course, which will be taught entirely by ear using the Fiddlequest online curriculum. (A subscription to Fiddlequest is free for students during the 8-week term).
2. Intro to Fiddle for Kids, Part 2
In the continuation of Part 1, kids ages 6 and up will have a lot of fun and will set themselves up to become lifelong learners of the fiddle. Continuing students will begin to focus on the left-hand technique, exploring simple melodies like “Boil Em Cabbage Down” and “Little Liza Jane.” No sheet music is needed for this course, which will be taught entirely by ear using the Fiddlequest online curriculum. (A subscription to Fiddlequest is free for students during the 8-week term).
Students with no violin experience should register for Part 1.
3. Intro to Guitar and Ukulele for Kids
In this class, kids ages 6 and up will have a lot of fun and will set themselves up to become lifelong learners of the guitar or ukulele, ready to accompany any melody! Students will start with 3-string chords to help them get playing right away. Forming basic chords, learning to strum, and keeping rhythm are the essential skills we’ll focus on in this course. We will start from scratch, learning the parts and strings of each instrument and simple 3-string chords, but will be able to engage more experienced students as well. Like the fiddle classes, we’ll clap and sing and learn the melodies and chords to popular tunes, all by ear!
